It can form a bridging network between particles, increasing their size and promoting sedimentation or flotation. The application of PAM as a flocculant can improve the efficiency of solid-liquid separation in sedimentation basins or flotation units.

Polyacrylamide can be used as a flocculant in sludge dewatering processes such as belt filter presses or centrifuges.
