How to use polyacrylamide properly?
Jun 06, 2024Polyacrylamide (PAM) is a water-soluble linear high molecular polymer formed by the polymerization of acrylamide (AM) monomers initiated by free radicals. It is also a high molecular water treatment flocculant that can adsorb suspended particles in the water, act as a link and bridge between particles, make fine particles form relatively large flocs, and accelerate the precipitation rate. So what should we pay attention to when using polyacrylamide?
The water used to dissolve polyacrylamide (PAM) should be clean (such as tap water) and not sewage. Water at room temperature is sufficient and generally does not need to be heated. Water temperature below 5°C dissolves very slowly. The higher the water temperature, the faster the dissolution rate, but above 40°C, the polymer will degrade faster, affecting the use effect. Generally, tap water is suitable for preparing PAM. Strong acid, strong alkali, and high-salt water are not suitable for preparation. Granular polyacrylamide cannot be added directly to sewage. It must be dissolved in water before use, and its aqueous solution is used to treat sewage. The prepared solution should not be transferred with a centrifugal pump to avoid shear degradation of the PAM solution caused by high-speed rotating blades.
The following factors should be considered when selecting PAM concentration:
1. If the preparation tank is small and the daily dosage is large, it is recommended to prepare a slightly concentrated one (such as 0.3%).
2. When the molecular weight of the polymer is very high, it is recommended to prepare a slightly dilute one (such as 0.1%).
3. If the polymer solution is not well dispersed due to equipment reasons when it is added to sewage, it is recommended to prepare a slightly dilute one.
In short, if the concentration of polyacrylamide PAM solution is too high, it will cause the agitator motor to be overloaded, and it will also cause poor dispersion after entering the sewage, affecting the use effect. A dilute solution will help improve the use effect.
